Birthday Poem for Paula Green

The Tai Tokerau begins

where you were born

te hiku

that rose out of the ocean

as Hikurangi

as Te Ika a Maui

in its glistening

flesh

scales as sharp

as a taniwha harpoon

beginning again

Hari Huritau e Paula

rise in the dive

and swim past

the Muriwai light

to the northerly swells

of your birthplace

and your heart

  1. Dear Robert, This poem is like pounamu, a gift i will hold to my chest, that holds my mountain and my river, that speaks of where i come from. I read this poem in your voice. It is utterly wonderful. Utterly ,moving. I am so touched. Love Paula x
